Whether you want to send a Thank You card or a Get Well Soon card, here’s how to create custom greeting cards on Mac.
OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 was recently released, and with it came an all-new Photos app that replaces iPhoto and Aperture on Mac. It’s a simpler photo management tool, but it comes with a handful of features. It isn’t just an updated version of iPhoto either. Instead, it’s a whole new app with a plethora of new features, including the ability to access your iCloud Photo Library, which means that when you take a photo on your iPhone or iPad, that photo will automatically be viewable on your Mac through the Photos app, thanks to iCloud.
Perhaps one of the coolest features is that edits made to a photo on your iPhone or iPad in the Photos app can be automatically synced to all devices instantly, and the process can be done the other way around as well.
The design of Photos on Mac looks nearly identical to how it looks on iOS 8, with a few obvious design differences since it’s on a Mac rather than your iPhone or iPad. In the app, you can do things like sort your photos and videos and even only view special files like panoramics, burst shots, slow motion, and timelapse video, separating all other photos and videos.
With the new Photos app, you can manage your photos and edit them as well, but did you know you can also create custom greeting cards and have them shipped to your front step? You can use any of your pictures in your photos library and even add custom messages to the card, giving it that ultimate personal touch.
It’s one of the awesome hidden features of the Photos app, and it’s a much better option than going to your local card shop and picking out a pre-printed generic greeting card. If you want to stand out during Christmas time or send that special someone a special birthday card, here’s how to create custom greeting cards on your Mac using the new Photos app.
First thing’s first before we start, though. You’ll need to import any photos that you want to use for your card into the Photos app. You can simply do this by clicking and dragging photos from a folder into the Photos app window. Your pictures will still be stored in that folder, but will simply be imported into the Photos app for management.
To begin creating a custom greeting card, open up the Photos app and go up to the menu bar in the upper-left corner of the screen and click on File > Create Card.
Next, you’ll choose what kind of card you want to create, You can choose between a Letterpress card, a simple Folded card, or a Flat card (similar to a postcard, but still goes into an envelope). Flat cards are the cheapest, but Letterpress cards offer the best quality overall.
After that, you’ll need to choose a theme and style. You can go up toward the top of the window and select a specific holiday or occasion in the drop-down menu. After you select a theme, click Create Card in the upper-right corner.
At this point, you can begin creating and customizing your card. You’ll be provided with a default layout, but if you want to change it, simply click Options.
Next, click on Add Photos in the bottom-right and then click and drag them into the layout. You can then edit the text by clicking on it and typing in whatever you want.
Toward the top of the window, you’ll see Front, Inside, and Back. Clicking on one of these will take you to that section of the card where you can edit the text and even add more photos.
Once you have finished creating and customizing the card, click on Buy Card in the top-right corner. From there, you’ll finalize your order and select how many cards you want made.
Be aware that shipping could take longer than a few days, so prepare ahead of time if you need a card by a certain date. In my case, I ordered a card on May 5 and it told me that it would be delivered by May 15. Your mileage will vary, obviously, but keep this in mind.
